A Motivated Introduction to Character Sheaves and the Orbit Method for Unipotent Groups in Positive Characteristic

چکیده
This article is based on lectures given by the authors in 2005 and 2006. Our first goal is to present an introduction to the orbit method with an emphasis on the character theory of finite nilpotent groups. The second goal (motivated by a recent work of G. Lusztig) is to explain several nontrivial aspects of character theory for finite groups of the form G(Fqn), where G is a unipotent algebraic group over Fq. In particular, we introduce the notion of a character sheaf for a unipotent group, and provide a toy model for the representation-theoretic notion of an L-packet.

Character Sheaves on Disconnected Groups
Throughout this paper, G denotes a fixed, not necessarily connected, reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k with a fixed connected component D which generates G. This paper is a part of a series [L9] which attempts to develop a theory of character sheaves on D. Our main result here is the classification of ”unipotent” character sheaves on D (under a mild assumption on th...
متن کاملSome Properties of Character Sheaves
In 1986, George Lusztig stated some interesting properties of character sheaves with non-zero restriction to the unipotent variety and proved them for the group SO2n+1(Fq) under the assumption that the characteristic p of Fq is good. In February 1992, the author has given lectures on that proof of Lusztig in the Seminar “Faisceaux Caractères” at the École Normale Supérieure and it was no doubt ...

We classify the unipotent character sheaves on a fixed connected component of a reductive algebraic group under a mild condition on the characteristic of the ground field.

Let G0 be a connected unipotent group over a finite field Fq, and let G = G0 ⊗Fq Fq, equipped with the Frobenius endomorphism Frq : G −→ G. For every character sheaf M on G such that Frq M ∼= M , we prove that M comes from an irreducible perverse sheaf M0 on G0 such that M0 is pure of weight 0 (as an `-adic complex) and for each integer n ≥ 1 the “trace of Frobenius” function tM0⊗FqFqn on G0(Fq...
متن کاملCharacter Values, Schur Indices and Character Sheaves
In this paper we are concerned with the problem of determining the character values and Schur indices of a finite group of Lie type over Fq. We show that (under some conditions on q) these values lie in the ring of algebraic integers generated by (1 + ñq)/2 and roots of unity of order prime to q. Furthermore, we determine the Schur indices for some of the (nonrational) unipotent characters in ...
